Top tourist attraction in Prague

The capital of the Czech Republic, Prague, is separated by the Vltava River. The city is known as the "City of Hundred Spires" and is famous for its historical center, the Old Town Square.

There are colorful Baroque buildings, Gothic churches, and an hourly animation of the medieval astronomical clock. In recent years Prague has become a very popular tourist destination, offering many things to tourists.

Prague is no longer an economical city as it was 15 years ago. Beer is still pleasantly cheap, but still expensive at attractions like St. Vitus Cathedral. Fortunately, for travelers with a limited budget or with no budget, the Czech capital still has a lot of fun.

Best places for visiting in Prague

Prague is a city of architectural buildings. Here is our list of top tourist attractions:

  • St. Vitus Cathedral

St. Vitus Cathedral is located within the walls of Prague Castle. Inside, you'll find the Baroque silver tomb of St. John of Nepomuck, magnificent art nouveau stained glass, 14th-century mosaics of the Last Judgment, and the tombs of St. Wenceslas and Charles IV.

Instead of entering the castle directly, we recommend walking in the garden from the left side of the front gate to enjoy unobstructed city views. Go past the fountain of little angels and find the stairs on the right. Go up to the stairs through walls of the castle to discover the most breathtaking church.

  • The Old Town Square and the astronomical clock

Prague's historical center, the Old Town (Stare Mesto), is one of the best places to start exploring the city, the stunning Old Town Square (Staromestske Namesti). The square itself is a great place to appreciate the magnificent architecture of Prague.

The highlight is the Old Town Hall (Staromestska radnice), where the wonderful astronomical clock (Orloj) of the early 15th century was located.

Twelve Apostles and other figures appeared and paraded the clock face, and every hour came to life. Ascent to the top of the Old Town Hall tower (by stairs or elevator) and enjoy the beautiful views of Prague.

  • Vltava River

The Vltava River flows into Prague from South Bohemia, and its banks are the best view of Prague's historic center. Stroll along with the trendy cafes, bars, and market embankments or delve into some of the islands in river.

The river cruise will introduce you to some of the most famous landmarks in the city.  You can rent a motorboat or a rowboat and explore the river on your own. Look at the highlights of Prague from a unique viewpoint while relaxing on a 50-minute journey. Get on the boat, choose a seat, order a drink or a light meal and stay comfortable.

  • Charles Bridge

Charles bridge over the Vltava, which connects the Old Town and the Lesser Town, is Prague's most iconic landmark. Charles IV built this bridge in 1357 to replace the Judith Bridge, which was damaged by floods in 1342.

The sides of the pedestrian bridge are lined with 30 Baroque statues and countless stalls full of vendors, musicians, artists, and beggars. The bridge is a vibrant and lively area that is rarely empty, but it is less crowded when you look at it at dawn or night.

There are towers at both ends of Charles Bridge, and those who climb the stairs have a magnificent view of the bridge.

  • Prague Castle

Prague Castle is located in Hradcany (castle district) and is arguably the most popular tourist attraction in the city for obvious reasons. This breathtaking castle has always been the residence of Czech rulers and is now the official house of the president.

The castle park is free, but you can visit many buildings such as St. Vitus Cathedral, St. George, and Golden Lane with a combined ticket.
